ロンドンでの家探しを難しくしているのは、問題のある大家が多いことが一因であるのだが、今回ちょっとふざけた記事を見つけたので、ネタとしてそれを訳してみる。
以前書いた「イギリス人の建前と本音の見分け方」のノリに近いが、今回はもっとおふざけなので、あまり真面目にとらえないように。
でも悲しいが当たっていることもあるので、適当に参考にしてもらいたい。

物件の条件の説明
- “Suitable for a professional couple” – Obviously we’re saying this because nobody could afford this on their own.
「社会人カップルにおすすめ」……1人じゃとても払えない値段設定。 - “Exclusive opportunity” – The people who buy these properties will live there for one week of the year.
「またとない機会」……この物件に住む人は1週間で出ていく。 - “Young professionals” – Actual adults still living together like students because the housing market is so fucked.
「若い社会人（のテナント歓迎、などに使われる）」……いい大人でも学生みたいに家をシェアして住んでいる。家賃が全体的に高いから。
地域の説明
- “Up and coming area” – Everyone who was born here will be gone within 5-10 years.
「人気上昇中の」……ここ出身の人は5～10年以内に引っ越していく。 - “Vibrant” – For god’s sake don’t google the crime rates for this postcode.
「活気のある」……この地域の犯罪率はググってくれるな。 - “Thriving nightlife” – There are several 24-hour chicken shops nearby.
「華やかなナイトライフ」……24時間営業のフライドチキン屋がいくつかある。 - “Central location” – Just outside the Zone 2 border.
「中心地に位置する」……ゾーン1に近いゾーン2だ。 - “Community feel” – People will shout at you at the bus stop.
「地域コミュニティが活発」……バス停で人がよく怒鳴ってくるよ。 - “Urban” – Lots of graffiti for you to Instagram.
「都会」……グラフィティーだらけ。 - “Close to great shopping” – There’s a big Asda a bus ride away.
「買い物に便利な立地」……バスでAsda（格安スーパー）まで行けるよ。 - “Cafe culture” – There’s a Pret quite nearby.
「カフェ文化」……プレ・タ・マンジェ（ドトールみたいなもの）が近くにある。 - “Near Shoreditch” – Essex.
「若者に人気の繁華街、ショーディッチに近いよ」……実際の住所はエセックス。
部屋の設備についての説明
- “Cosy” – You will be able to touch both walls with your arms outstretched.
「快適な」……腕を伸ばしたら両側の壁に届くくらい狭い。 - “Extra single bedroom/study space” – Large storage cupboard.
「加えてさらにシングルルーム／勉強スペースもあり」……広い収納スペースがある。 - “Period features” – Single-glazed windows.
「クラシックな趣きがある」……窓は一重。（ロンドンの冬は寒いので、二重窓必須。）
※注：イギリスではヴィクトリアン・ハウスなど、クラシックな装飾や建築の家が贅沢とされる。 - “In need of modernisation” – Hasn’t been redecorated since the ’70s.
「現代的にする必要のある家」……70年代からリニューアルしてない。 - “Basement flat” – Constant damp.
「地下1階の部屋」……常に湿気た部屋 - “Well presented” – This flat has all four walls AND a roof.
「しっかり作られた」……４面の壁と屋根がある。 - “Lots of character” – This property was once an appalling slum and/or brothel.
「とても個性的」……この建物は以前とんでもなく汚かった又は売春宿だった。 - “Warehouse conversion” – This building was never meant for human occupation.
「倉庫を改築した建物」……この建物は本来人の住むところじゃなかった。 - “Homely” – One of the previous tenants put up some fairy lights.
「家庭的な」……前の住人が（クリスマスなどに使う）カラフルな豆電球を残していったよ。
家の設備の説明
- “Open plan living” – We put a sofa in the kitchen.
「オープンキッチンのリビング」……キッチンにソファーを置いただけ。 - “Access to a shared garden” – You can have a BBQ while your neighbours watch.
「共有のガーデンがある」……ＢＢＱができる。近所の人に覗かれるけど。
- “Bike storage” – Terrifying 50-year-old shed full of spiders.
「自転車駐車場つき」……クモの巣だらけの50年物のガレージ。 - “Balcony” – Your bike will still get stolen from here.
「バルコニー付き」……自転車は盗まれる可能性がある（泥棒が入ってくるかもね）。 - “Recently updated” – We replaced the oven because the gas safety inspector told us it was hazardous.
「最近リニューアル済み」……ガスチェックで注意されたからオーブンを取り換えたよ。 - “New-build” – You will accidentally punch through one of the walls when you’re drunk.
「新築」……酔って壁を殴ったら穴が空くよ。 - “Modern interior” – Literally everything in this flat is painted white or made of chrome.
「モダンインテリア」……全部白いペンキで塗って、金属の表面はメッキで仕上げてある。 - “Studio” – Good luck getting the smell of bacon and onions out of your duvet.
「スタジオ（シェアなしのマンション、アパート）」……ただのワンルーム。ベーコンの匂いが布団につくよ。 - “Bathroom suite” – For some reason we’re acting like having a toilet is a perk.
「バスルーム・スイート」……トイレが部屋にあるだけだけど、それがとても特別なように宣伝しているのさ。 - “Large living room” – There is a living room.
「広いリビングールーム」……リビングルームあり。 - “Furnished” – We bought everything from the cheapest Ikea range.
「家具付き」……イケアで一番安い家具付き。 - “Luxuriously furnished” – We bought everything from the second-cheapest Ikea range.
「贅沢なインテリア」……イケアで2番目に安い家具付き。
交通の便の説明
- “Near to local amenities” – There is a Nisa 20 minutes’ walk away.
「お店に近い」……Nisa（スーパー）まで徒歩20分。 - “Great transport links” – There is a bus stop right outside your house. The buses will keep you awake at night, forever.
「交通の便が大変良い」……家のすぐそばにバス停あり。ナイトバスの音で一晩中寝れないよ。 - “10 minutes from the tube station” – By bike, maybe.
「地下鉄駅から10分」……自転車で10分。
